The city was founded just some centuries ago, in 1858 as an outpost to protect the Russian-Chinese border. Khabarovsk City is named after its founder Yerofei Khabarov, the Russian explorer of Siberia and the Far East. The city stretches along the Amur River, which is the main waterway of the Far East. The city is one big harbor, designed for trade and transport purposes. The occupied area of the city is 390 km2. Khabarovsk is the administrative center. Its population exceeds five hundred thousand people.
