every hour about 1,500 people visit the louvre museum in paris with the specific intention of seeing one particular painting: the mona lisa by leonardo da vinci. most of these visitors look at the painting for about three minutes before they walk back to the tourist buses outside.

leonardo loved the painting very much and people say that he took it everywhere with him. the painting was originally ordered by a rich businessman in florence, who wanted a portrait of his wife, lisa. leonardo began the painting in 1503 and he finished it about three or four years later. the fact that leonardo wanted to keep the painting himself, adds to the mona lisa’s mystique.

mona lisa’s mysterious smile has fascinated everyone who has ever seen the painting. in his ‘lives of the artists’, written just a few years after leonardo’s death, giorgio vasari wrote, ‘while painting mona lisa leonardo employed singers and musicians to keep her happy and so avoid the sadness that painters usually give to portraits. as a result, there was a smile that seemed divine rather than human; and those who saw it were amazed to find how alive and real it appeared.’

modern art critics also emphasize how the portrait seems alive and real. ‘she is like a living person,’ writes art historian e.h. gombrich, ‘she seems to change before our eyes. even in photographs we can experience this strange effect. sometimes she seems to be looking down on us, and sometimes we can detect sadness in her smile. all this sounds rather mysterious, and it is; that is so often the effect of a great work of art.’

the mona lisa is certainly a masterpiece, a magnificent work of art, but it is also a part of modern popular culture. her image appears on plates, tshirts, mouse pads and in advertisements. perhaps for this reason, officials at the louvre museum placed the painting in a specially built area in a room with other great 16th century italian paintings. in this way, visitors have a better chance to appreciate the painting as a work of art rather than as a tourist attraction.

1. How my family and I see The New Year in: I like the New Year's Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and it is the first day of the New Year. The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don't go to school and my parents don't go to work.

We usually have a very interesting New Year's party at school. We have it on the 28th or 29th of December.

Our family prepares for the New Year's holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year's tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. We don't like artificial synthetic trees. I like to decorate the New Year's tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.

My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and make a nice cake. I help them to lay the table. 

All the members of our family clean the flat before the holiday and then each of us try to get dressed well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us by 9 or 10 o'clock in the evening.

At 12 o'clock we sit at the festive table and we are glad to see the New Year in. There are a lot of delicious things on the table and we begin to celebrate the holiday. We say, to each other, "Best wishes for the New Year!" We begin to eat, to joke, to sing songs, to dance to music, to listen to the president's festive speech on TV. Then we watch the holiday salute and sometimes we go to the central square where there are a lot of people welcoming the New Year in!

I hope that the next year will be better than the last one.

The New Year's Day is always connected with our new hopes and dreams.

It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year's Eve.

I usually get many nice useful things from my parents and relatives.

My parents put their presents under the New Year's tree.

We don't go to bed till morning, we continue to watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and make jokes.

I enjoy this holiday very much.

As usual in our family, a week for 2-3 before the New Year we make our menu of holiday table and write a list of products that need to buy something to buy in advance and not get lost in this sea of pre-sales. Shurik ordered stuffed fish, Sergei calamari salad, I'm Greek salad, and historically we have always baked a cake of semi-finished products, not to steam with cakes. In the end it all turned out not so, as we expected. It all started with the fact that nobody wanted to kill the living carp, who did not want to go to sleep himself, despite the 4-hour walk through the frost in a cellophane bag bag. Carp wanted to live and lived. While we decided what to do with the carp, digested squid. They were rubber. With this bustle forgot to put the champagne in the fridge. Later it was found out, that in a hurry instead of the beam celery, петрушкии cilantro was purchased three bundle of cilantro, and olives without stones were olive trees with seeds. At exactly 24 00 behind hastily compiled by the festive table all clinked glasses of warm champagne (I warm carrot juice) and ran all the family at the kitchen picking the bones of olives for the salad. В итоге всё получилось совсем не так, как мы ожидали. Началось всё с того, что никто не хотел убивать живого карпа, который никак не хотел засыпать сам, несмотря на 4х часовую прогулку по морозу в целлофановом пакетике. Карп хотел жить и жил. Пока решали, что делать с карпом, переварили кальмары. Они получились резиновыми. С этой суетой забыли поставить шампанское в холодильник. Позже выяснилось, что впопыхах вместо пучка сельдерея, петрушкии кинзы было куплено три пучка кинзы, а маслины без косточек оказались маслинами с косточками. Ровно в 24 00 за наспех собранным праздничным столом все чокнулись тёплым шампанским (я тёплым морковным соком) и побежали всей семьёй на кухню выковыривать косточки из маслин для салата. В результате на праздничном столе, к которому мы подгребли в час ночи, было: тёплое шампанское, салат из резиновых кальмаров, греческий салат без селдеря, петрушки, с размазанной мягкой брынзой и маслинами из которых выковыривали косточки, так и не поднявшийся в духовке кекс и бананы, купленные заранее, дня за 3 и которые успели покрыться «трупными» пятнами. Живой карп встречал Новый год, плавая в ванне (а мы все "в мыле" душ принять так и не успели). Праздник удался!
