i always wanted to have an interesting life: make a lot of friends, do some travelling before i settled down, have a few hobbies, spend a bit of time volunteering and not take on any job that would make me change my lifestyle. i never imagined i would end up with a high-powered job of a marketing manager. one day, i ran into an old high school friend of mine with whom i lost touch after graduation. he said, “how about joining our firm? we have a vacancy in our marketing department. i bet you’ll be a good fit. you just click with people, you can get on well with anyone.” i usually don’t rush into things. i thought, “this might be a good idea but i must think it over first.” however, suddenly i heard myself say, “i’ve never considered a career in marketing before, but sure, i’m in! ” what happened after was a ten-year long nightmare. i became a workaholic. i couldn’t imagine my life without working for 15 hours a day. i was expected to work on weekends, too. my duties were very varied: i was responsible for business analysis, strategic communication, advertising and promotion campaigns. i led a team of twenty people and managed multi-million dollar budgets. i was not allowed to go on vacations longer than two days. there was a time when i had a terrible cold - a sore throat, a runny nose, a cough and a headache - and i still  was called into the office because of an important meeting. in the end, i felt completely burned out. the final straw was when a man i had a crush on asked me out and i realized that because of my busy schedule i could only go out with him in half a year’s time! so i took a radical step and quit. i am a self-employed web designer now. i should say it is not easy on my own, but  i definitely don’t have to work myself to death!
