The traditions of celebrating Christmas and New Year in Ukraine differ little from Russian ones. Interestingly, our common ancestors celebrated Christmas before the baptism of Russia. That's just the holiday was called wrong, and korochunom. It is difficult to determine the exact origins of such a name: it may be due to the fact that nights are getting shorter and the days are longer. And only with the adoption of Christianity, this holiday got its usual name.
For the festive dinner, the whole family sat down. It is very important that the clothes on this day be thoroughly washed and clean. After dinner, it was necessary to go to the neighbors and apologize for possible guilt to each other in order to meet the New Year in peace and harmony. On the first day of the New Year, the most common was (and even now remains) the rite of sowing. It is believed that he came to us from pre-Christian times - as you know, our ancestors met the New Year not in the winter, but in the spring. Therefore, the rite of sowing is associated with hopes of a good harvest. They sowed mostly children, and more generously thanked those who came to the house first.
Традиції святкування Різдва та Нового року в Україні мало відрізняються від російських. Цікаво, що Різдво наші спільні предки відзначали ще до хрещення Русі. Ось тільки називалося свято не так, а Корочуном. Визначити точно витоки такої назви складно: можливо, відбувається воно від того, що ночі стають коротшими, а дні довше. І тільки з прийняттям християнства це свято отримало звичне нам назву.
До святкової вечері сідала вся родина. Дуже важливо, щоб одяг цього дня був ретельно випраної і чистою. Після вечері треба було обов'язково зайти до сусідів і попросити вибачення за можливу провину один перед одним, аби Новий рік зустріти в мирі та злагоді. У перший день Нового року найбільш поширеним був (та й зараз подекуди залишається) обряд посівання. Вважається, що прийшов він до нас ще з дохристиянських часів - як відомо, наші пращури зустрічали Новий рік не взимку, а навесні. Тому обряд посівання пов'язаний з надіями на добрий урожай. Засівали здебільшого діти, причому щедріше всіх обдаровували тих, хто прийшов в будинок першим.
