In the 1930s families in England __were___ larger, working hours
longer and incomes lower. Most fathers __worked___ full time, but there
__was__ little work for women. Most people __lived__ in rented or
council property houses without bathrooms, indoors toilets, electricity or
hot water. But you could __leave__ your home unlocked, and __feel___
safe in the streets.
Now homes ___are___ much more comfortable. All __have__an
indoor toilet and bath. Mothers ___work__ full or part-time. Children
__can__ go out whenever they like because of the amount of traffic and
crime.
In 1930s children __got up__ at 6.30 or 7 a.m., __had__ breakfast
and __went__ to school on foot. After school they__played__ with their
brothers or sisters and _worked__ in the home. With no television, a cold
house, and poor light, bedtime _began__ early – at 7 or 7.30 p.m. On
Mondays children _helped__ with the washing. Cleaning day _was__
Friday, and there __was__ one day in the week for baking.
Now children __get up_ later. They _do__ different after-school
activities and __watch__ a lot of television.
In 30s children _had__ three sets of clothes – best for church,
second best for school, and clothes for playing. They __wore__ dark
colours and the material __was__ often uncomfortable. Most clothes were
home-made and mended many times. Then younger brothers
and sisters them. "My father always me to school in
shoes", one sixty-year-old man. Poor children boots.
Now children __wear_ a lot of clothes in bright colours. There
__are_ clothes for special occasions, and children __buy__ new clothes
throughout the year. T-shirts , jeans , track suits and training shoes
popular among teenagers.
