Существует множество анекдотов о проблемах, которые испытывают люди, путешествуя за рубеж без знания языка страны, в которую едут. Вот история француза, отправившегося в США, который во время обеда в ресторане захотел заказать грибы. Не зная, как выразиться, чтобы его поняли, он попросил карандаш и бумагу и аккуратно нарисовал гриб. Рисунок его при этом был не слишком хорош, потому что озадаченный официант вернулся минут через десять не с заказанными грибами, а с большим мужским зонтом. Другая похожая история случилась с двумя американцами, путешествующими по Испании. Ни один из них не говорил по-испански, и однажды, обедая в ресторане в небольшой деревеньке, у них возникли серьёзные сложности с объяснением официанту, чего же они хотят. Один из них хотел стакан молока. Официант, казалось, не мог ничего понять.
В конце концов, мужчина нарисовал корову на обратной стороне меню. Бедный официант, однако, всё ещё выглядел озадаченным. Наконец, он ретировался и ушёл из ресторана где-то на полчаса. Вернулся он крайне довольным собой. В руках он держал 2 билета на бой быков.
