Past Simple и Past Continuous – это времена в английском языке, относящиеся к группе , которые находятся в тесной взаимосвязи. Past Simple переводится на русский, как Простое время, и описывает обычные, фиксированные, регулярные действия в Длительное время, которое используется для описания длительного, незаконченного действия или для заострения внимания на длительности процесса. Довольно часто они употребляются в предложении вместе:

He was reading a new magazine, when his sister entered the living-room – Он читал новый журнал, когда его сестра вошла в комнату.

He was driving a car, when somebody called him – Он вёл автомобиль, когда кто-то позвонил ему.

В этих случаях их роднит одно время. Но есть вещи, и насчитывается их немало, которые разнят их. Главное – это отношение к действию.

В английском языке существуют глаголы состояния (to hear – слышать, to adore – обожать, to wish – желать), которые не могут употребляться в Past Continuous. В предложениях, где необходимо подчеркнуть длительность в , но глагол не позволяет, на приходит Past Simple.
