Task 1: Complete the text with the Past Simple form of the verbs in brackets:

Last Sunday we (go) on a picnic in the country. My mum (drive) the car. My dad (sleep) all the way there because he was very tired. When we (get) there, we (run) straight to the river. We (swim) for a long time and then we (eat) our lunch. We (leave) at six o'clock. We were tired but very happy. We (have) such a lovely time.

Anne Frank Anne Frank was a Jewish girl who was living with her family when the Germans were invading (1 invaded) Holland in 1940. The German authorities introduced harsh anti-Jewish laws and start (2 started) to deport Jews to concentration camps in Eastern Europe. In July 1942 Ann's father did hear (3 heard) a rumour that he was going to be arrested by the police and the family resolved found (4 to find) a hiding place. He left the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals  ranks because of his opposition to the Prime Minister's policy. He held different responsible posts.

Soon after the outbreak of the Second World War he became Prime Minister and his heartening leadership and speeches inspired the nation to greater efforts in the darkest days of the war.Churchill had great literary gifts and he wrote many books, including a life of his father and histories of the First and Second World Wars.
