Kazakhstan’s sporting success

Kazakhs are becoming more famous for their success in sport. People probably know them best for boxing. Kazakhstani boxers often win more Olympic medals than any other country except Cuba and Russia. The 2012 Summer Olympics. 204 countries sent over 10 000 athletes to compete in 300 events. 79 countries won medals. From those 79, Kazakhstan finished twelfth in the list of overall. What a fantastic result!

Which medals did they win? 115 Kazakh athletes went to the Games and they left with 12 medals. Seven were gold! So who won these medals? The most famous Kazakhstani cyclist, Alexander Vinokurov, won a gold medal, and there were also golds in boxing and weightlifting, The women did extremely well. These gold medals were in women’s weightlifting, and one went to Olga Rypakova for athletics.
