I like this because it means I can read a book or a newspaper. On the Continent, everybody wants to tell you his life story. Some years ago I travelled by train from London to Paris. It was my first visit to Paris so I made up my mind to tour round France for my holidays. As I was going on a long journey I took a lot of books with me. There was an Englishman in the compartment with me and, in a typically English way, he did not speak a word during our journey through the English countryside or while crossing the Channel. But the minute we were in France he said, “Ah, now we are in France, we can talk.” And for the rest of the trip to Paris he told me his life story.

The Christian feast of the Nativity of Christ is celebrated with reverence in both Orthodox and Catholic families. In the old days, people sat at the table with food after the appearance of the first star in the sky. Currently, this tradition is held in some Russian families who sit down to the table after a large evening service. At Christmas, you can make a wish that is sure to come true. Christmas is preceded by fasting. Therefore, at this time you can not eat fatty foods. On Christmas eve, Housewives tidy the houses to celebrate the holiday in a clean house. On January 7th the fasting ends and food on Christmas day must be satisfying and tasty.

Христианский праздник Рождества Христова отмечается с благоговением как в православных, так и в католических семьях. В старину люди садились за стол с едой после появления на небе первой звезды. В настоящее время эта традиция только в некоторых в некоторых российских семьях, которые садятся за стол после большой вечерней службы. На Рождество можно загадать желание, которое обязательно сбудется. Рождеству предшествует пост. Поэтому в это время нельзя есть жирную пищу. В канун Рождества хозяйки убирают дома, чтобы отпраздновать праздник в чистом доме. 7 января заканчивается пост, и еда на Рождество должна быть сытной и вкусной.
