Родители уходят на работу, велев дочке не ходить со двора и беречь младшего братца. но девочка сажает братца под окошком, а сама бежит на улицу. гуси-лебеди тем временем уносят братца на крылышках. сестра бежит догонять гусей-лебедей. по дороге она встречает печку, яблоню, молочную речку — кисельные берега. у них девочка спрашивает о братце, но печка просит ее отведать пирожка, яблоня — яблочка, речка — киселька с молоком. девочка не соглашается. она встречает ёжика, который указывает ей дорогу. приходит к избушке на курьих ножках, заглядывает туда — а там баба яга и братец. девочка уносит братца, а гуси-лебеди летят за нею в погоню. девочка просит речку спрятать ее и соглашается поесть киселька. потом ее прячет яблонька, причём приходится девочке поесть лесного яблочка, затем она прячется в печке и ест ржаной пирожок. гуси не видят ее и улетают ни с чем. девочка с братцем прибегают домой, а тут как раз отец с матерью приходят.
