Конечно, это не настоящий цирк, со львами и акробатами! Слово "цирк" употребляется потому, что дорога идет по кругу. Вы можете увидеть изображение Пикадилли-Серкус в верхнем правом углу изображения. Улица, которая проходит от Пикадилли-Серкус до Гайд-парка-Комер, называется Пикадилли. Пикадилли-странное слово, не правда ли? Так где же это происходит

В конце 16-го и начале 17-го веков существовала мода как для мужчин, так и для женщин из высших социальных классов носить жесткие, широкие воротники, которые были либо либо украшены оборками. В те дни эти круглые накрахмаленные воротнички назывались Пикадиллами, или оборками.

Сегодня мы называем их ершами. На картине вы можете увидеть картину человека из 16-го века с пикадиллом на шее. Королева Елизавета I (королева Елизавета Первая) также носила их, как вы можете видеть на картинке. Даже сегодня, в лондонском Тауэре, вы увидите знаменитых стражников-Бифитеров, носящих оборки как часть своего традиционного костюма.

Итак, какова же связь между улицей под названием Пикадилли и этим некогда модным и довольно нелепым галстуком? Так вот, в начале 17-го века (другими словами, в начале 1600-х годов) портной по имени Роберт Бейкер заработал столько денег на изготовлении и продаже пикадиллов, что купил участок земли к западу от Лондона (в то время этот район вообще не был в Лондоне!), а в 1612 году он построил там особняк. Люди называли особняк Пикадилли-Холл, потому что именно благодаря продаже пикадиллов он так разбогател! Со временем дорога, проходившая мимо особняка, стала называться Пикадилли.

Пиккадилли сейчас находится в самом сердце лондонского Вест-Энда, той части Лондона, где находится больше всего театров и туристических достопримечательностей.
