сад leave school if they wish. Some 16-year-olds continue their studies in the sixth form at school or at a sixth form college. The sixth form prepares pupils for a national exam called "A" level (Advanced Level) at 18. You need "A" levels to enter a university. 7 per cent of British school children go to private schools. These schools are very expensive. They are called independent schools. There are three levels of private schools: pre-preparatory schools (for children aged from 5 to 7 or 8); preparatory (prep) schools (for pupils aged from7 or 8 to 13) and public schools (for pupils aged from 13 to 18). Prep schools prepare children for the Common Entrance Exam which they take at the age of 11. Many preparatory and most public schools are boarding schools: children live at school during the school terms. Some "public schools" have a long history and tradition. Eton is the best known of these schools. It is possible to enter the best English Universities after leaving public schools. In England there are 47 universities. The oldest and most famous universities are Oxford and Cambridge. 2. I’d like to tell you about holidays which we like to celebrate with my family. Most of all we like New year, Mother's Day and Easter.

We often cook different tasty dishes for holidays. For example, chicken casserole, meat pie and fried turkey.

Soon we will celebrate the national holiday Maslenitsa. Usually we cook a lot of food, go to visit, walk and have fun on this day. We celebrate Shrovetide week. These days we eat a lot of food. The most important dish is the "symbol of the sun" Pancakes. This week, it is the duty of every person to help drive away the winter and awaken nature from winter sleep.

Welcome to Maslenitsa! You’ll have lots of fun!

Taras Shevchenko

Artist, poet, national bard of Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko was born on 9 March, 1814 in Moryntsi, Kiev gubernia. He was born a serf. When he was a teenager he became an orphan, and grew up in poverty. When he was 14, his owner, Engelhardt took him to serve as a houseboy. And Taras travelled with him to Vilnus and to St Petersburg. In Vilnus Taras for the first time heard different languages, Lithuanian, Russian and Polish and there he saw people whom their masters made free. When Engelhardt noticed the boys skiils in painting he apprenticed him to the painter Shiriayev for four years.

Shevchenko was an outstanding poet and a highly accomplished artist. There are 835 works written by him, although 270 are known to have been lost. His collection also contains over 150 portraits, 42 self-portraits. There are many landscapes, watercolours and etchings. The best is "A Dream" , "Haidamaki" , "Katerina" .
