Og is situated on the south coast of the island of Ogland. The city has grown a lot since the 1970s, when gold was discovered near the city. The old town has many interesting historic buildings including the magnificent Royal Palace and the ancient Temple of Rain. The Romans build that monumental building nearly 2,000 years ago. The new part of the city has changed a lot recently, with some impressive modern building like the new opera house and new parliament building. There are many new hotels, department stores and office blocks.
There are two important festivals in Og. The winter games in January have skiing and skating events. Also famous are the enormous snowball fights between different groups of young Oggers in the streets of the city. On June 17thOg celebrates Independence Day, with street parties and sports including turtle racing and incredibly dangerous shark riding competitions.
The Romans founded the city of Ogrium in 22 AD and occupied in for nearly four hundred years. Then the Vikings under Erik the Blue conquered the city. In 1007 the Oggers under King Kevin I defeated the Vikings at the battle of Ogsford. Ogland became independent and has been a neutral coutry for over six hundred years, since the end of the Anacondan wars in 1389. For centuries fishing and farming were the most important activities in Og. Everything changed in 1972, with the discovery of gold. Since then Og has become a prosperous and modern city.
