Одно из самых знаменитых творений И.Е. Репина – картина «Бурлаки на Волге». Прежде чем написать это полотно, художник путешествовал сначала по Неве, а потом – и по Волге. Рождению шедевра предшествовало написание этюдов, посвящённых бурлакам, и их портретов. Знакомство живописца с людьми этой тяжёлой профессии состоялось в 1870 году, а спустя три года появилась на свет картина в её окончательном варианте.Первое впечатление от полотна – группа измождённых людей под жарким солнцем тянет баржу, преодолевая силу течения великой русской реки. В ватаге – одиннадцать человек, и каждый из них тянет лямку, врезающуюся в грудь и плечи. По изорванным одеждам становится понятно, что на такую работу человека может толкнуть только крайняя бедность. У некоторых бурлаков рубахи настолько ветхие, что лямка попросту протёрла их насквозь. Однако люди упорно продолжают тащить за канат судно. 

Exhausted from heat and fatigue, on the banks of the great river boatmen slowly pulled the heavy clumsy barge. The composition of the painting is constructed in such a way that the group moves as if at the viewer, but the figure is not close to each other. Before us – the eleven characters, all as one, – the poor and the destitute, but each with their own personality and character.
Ahead – three "Wheeler", headed by the Hauler by Caninum. The old boatman a face of the ancient philosopher embodies the best traits of the Russian peasant: tranquility, wisdom, perseverance. Next to him – bearded, the embodiment of primal force, and Ilka-sailor with a heavy, fierce look of a robber from beneath tangled hair... Powerlessly lowered hands boatmen, the legs are stretched, and in the people read different feelings here and resignation, and protest, and innocence, and anger...
The sun gently lights the coast, but the haulers are not up to the beauties of nature – the work requires superhuman effort. The old shirt was dark with sweat, shoulders are sore from satanovskaya twine, feet sink in the deep sand, and the path seems endless... But not pity cause the viewer their figures, and feel the mighty force. This formidable force has not yet perceived them brewing inside each and every one against his will, and there is no possibility to stop this process.
In the picture of Repin "barge haulers on the Volga" folk the theme of life-affirming sounds. The painting speaks of people's power, awakens the idea of the necessity of struggle, creates faith in the bright future of the people.
