Ekaterinburg city bore the most of the Soviet period of Russian history - from 1924 to 1991 - the name of the Sverdlovsk, is a scientific, industrial and transport centre with its rich history and sights. Ekaterinburg has the official status of an administrative center of the Ural Federal district, and the people call it the capital of Ural. Yekaterinburg is situated in 1667 kilometers East of Moscow, on the Eastern slope of the Ural mountains.
Ekaterinburg is one of the five largest (by population) of Russian cities, it is left behind only Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk. The city is divided into seven administrative districts, with an interesting fact is that the city centre is divided between the five areas.
Through the city of Ekaterinburg passes Iset river, also there are two large lakes - Shartash and Шувакиш. City, despite an abundance of industrial enterprises, and maybe even due to this fact is a very green, there are many parks, squares, gardens.
Ekaterinburg is known as a large industrial city, and the industry provided therein, are very diverse: optical, mechanical engineering, electronics, metallurgy, military-industrial complex, food and light.
Unlike many industrial cities, Ekaterinburg can boast that it developed and trading sector. Moreover, the higher level of retail trade turnover is observed in Russia only in the two cities - Moscow and St. Petersburg. In the city are actively developing shopping malls, multiplexes, shopping centers and shopping - at the beginning of 2009 there were a total of more than fifty.
