Город был разрушен в результате пожара в 1773 году, однако центр был перестроен сразу, замечательного русского классицизма. Центральный район в настоящее время составляют здания и комплексы, построенные в период между 1770-1830. Но самое приятное, что сделать в Костроме-это прогулка вдоль центральной улицы с торговыми галереями и деревянными домами. Хорошим местом для прогулок является также набережной реки Волга.
