I think you should talk to your friend even if you don't want to.
Tell him that his actions are bad and he might face various problems. For example, he might have a quarrel with the teacher if he notices that he is writing off. There also might be problems with the entire subject. If your friend doesn't understand that, offer him your help. Help him with the subject. Don't quarrel, solve the problem peacefully. Your friend will understand you and you'll resolve the conflict and resume your good friendship. Will you tell me later how everything went and how you solved the problem?
