(present or past, simple or continuous).
A. I wonder why Alan didn’t buy me anything for my birthday.
I suppose he might have forgotten (forget). 1) Or he might
(think) that now I’m getting on, I don’t like to be reminded of my ad-
60
vancing years. 2) On the other hand, he may (not forget)! 3)
He might (give) me a present this evening when I see him.
4) Oh no! He could (plan) a surprise party like last year.
What a disaster that was! I hope he isn’t doing it again!
B. 1) We haven’t seen our cat since yesterday morning. I can’t help
thinking that she might (be run over). 2) Or a dog could
(frighten) her. 3) She may (hide) in someone’s garden shed. 4) She might not (be able to) get out! 5) But then
cats do wander off sometimes. She may (be) fine and someone
could (feed) her now – in which case may not (be)
in a hurry to come home.
C. 1) I wonder why Heather has bought all these cakes and biscuits? I suppose there could (be) a special offer on at the
supermarket. 2) Or she might (have) friends round for tea this
afternoon. 3) Come to think of it, sometimes she does some shopping for old Dorothy next door, so they may not all (be) for
Heather. 4) She might (buy) some for Dorothy.

William Shakespeare,the greatest English playwright,
was born in 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon in England.  Stratford is a small country town in a farming district near the centre of England .the Avon, which is a
pretty river with  grass and trees all along its banks,
runs through Stratford. Not much is known of Shakespeare's father. He was a farmer who, at different times of his life, sold meat and bought and sold
wool. He was poor and was often in money difficulties.
Very little is known about the life of his only son William
also the little house in which the great writer was born
still stands. It is now a museum. William went to
school in Stratford. In 1586 he went to London.
Probably the first work he did there was at one of the two
theatres that there were in London at that time. Then
he became an actor and soon began to write plays for the
company of actors to which he belonged. Shakespeare
bought the largest house in his home town in 1597, but
he did not spend much time there till 1610. He spent the
last years of his life in it.
