When during the second world war, American soldiers bill vine (Bill Wynne) found in the trenches of the Yorkshire Terrier, he named him Smokey (Smoky) and took it with him. Together they visited New Guinea, and soon Smokey began to help the soldier in his work.

Because of the dedication of the owner and obedience, as well as its small size, Smokey could get through narrow pipes and communication wires under the Japanese airfield.

Without her help, the soldiers had to dig trenches and is under constant bombardment by enemy forces.

Smokey also worked in hospitals as a dog therapist for wounded soldiers. After the war she began to play some roles in Hollywood and appearing on different TV shows.

When Smokey did not, in her memory, erected a monument in Cleveland, Ohio.
