The eruption of the Krakatau on a small island
located in the middle of the Sunda Strait in
August 1883 was, in many aspects, the first
global catastrophe.
The news about the eruption, its following
tsunami and the more than 36,000 victims
travelled fast thanks to the recently installed
worldwide telegraphic network.The final explosion of Krakatau produced the
loudest sound ever recorded in modern history,
heard on over 10% of Earth’s area. Reports of a
distant cannonade or what seemed to be
gunfire were reported from Australia and the
island of Mauritius, more than 4,650km distant
from the erupting volcano.
Krakatau was the first scientifically well
recorded and studied eruption of a volcano,
from the very beginning to its disastrous
ending.

People have always polluted the environment. However, until recently, pollution was not a serious problem. People lived in sparsely populated agricultural areas, they were not polluting cars. With the development of crowded industrial cities where large amounts of waste are dumped on a small area, this problem became much more serious. Automobiles and other new inventions make pollution more and more intense. In the late 60-ies people began to feel alarmed at the danger of environmental pollution. Air, water and soil are necessary for existence of all living beings. However, polluted air can cause illness and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine animals. On contaminated soil can not be cultivated food crops. In addition, environmental pollution spoils the natural beauty of our planet. The problem of environmental pollution is as complicated as serious. Cars pollute the air, but give people the opportunity of movement. Factories pollute the air and water but they provide jobs for people and produce necessary goods. Fertilizers and pesticides are important for agriculture, but they can ruin soil. Thus, people would have to stop using many useful things if they wanted to end pollution immediately. Most people, of course, doesn't want that. However, pollution can be reduced gradually. Scientists and engineers can find ways to reduce harmful emissions from cars and factories. The government could issue laws that would make enterprises take measures to reduce pollution. Individuals and groups of people can work together to persuade enterprises to stop activities causing environmental pollution
