SPACE COLONISATION: Future or Fantasy? Since Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon on 20th July, 1969 and declare smail step for man, one giant leap for mankind", people have been dreaming abou creating futuristic communities in space. Science fiction films such as 2001: A Sp Odyssey and Star Wars have filled our minds with images of spacecraft travelling at the speed of light to colonies on other planets in another solar system. Until now these ideas have just been fantasy, but now leading scientists such as Stephen Hawking say that colonising space is the only answer for the future survival ol mankind; otherwise we will die out. 1__But is space colonisation really possible? One solution would be for us to move to space stations orbiting near Earth. After all. astronauts have already been living on NASA's International Space Station (ISS continuously since 2000. The IS gets its power from solar panels, it generates its own oxygen and even recycles water, but there's still a huge problem; all of its food and other supplies have to be sent from Earth. 2__So maybe colonising the moon would be a better solution! The moon has rich resources which could be used to construct a colony. Also, in 2009, scientists found water on the moon, which could be used to extract oxygen for breathing. 3__There is no atmosphere on the moon and it is boiling hot during 13 days of sunlight and then freezing cold during 13 days of darkness. So any human colony there would have to live in a huge indoor biosphere". Mars would be another option, but the problems there would be similar to those on the moon. Scientists have suggested creating a more Earth-like atmosphere there by releasing carbon dioxide and warming it up, but this could take about 1,000 years! Stephen Hawking believes that the best solution is to look for Earth-like planets to colonise. "If only 1% of the 1,000 or so stars within 30 light years of Earth had an Earth-sized rocky planet in just the right place for life, there would still be 10 planets for colonisation in our 'neighbourhood," Hawking said. 4___ Travelling on Voyager 1, the fastest spacecraft we've ever sent into space, it would take over 700,000 years to get to Alpha Centauri, the closest star system. Hawking, though, believes that new technologies could soon help us to travel just below the speed of light. 5 If we had endless amounts of money for space exploration, we would have already overcome these problems and built the first space colonies. The fact is, it costs about £6,000 to put half a kilo of anything into near-Earth orbit. 6 Just imagine – if people hadn't given Columbus money for his voyage to America in 1492, NASA probably wouldn't even exist today! So, although there are many challenges to overcome, Professor Hawking stll believes it will only be a matter of time before we are living in space. 7 do you think? Is space truly the final frontier? *an environment that supports life

After school I go home.Home change clothes and warm up food to eat. After singing take the necessary books and sit down to do homework. Some lessons may be easy, but some are very difficult.I end up doing the lessons in different ways. That happens later, and it happens that there is little time to play. Then we have dinner and I go to brush my teeth. Then wear pajamas and go to sleep.

My School (1)

As you become older you realize that there are several essential things and places you always long to come back to. They are your birthplace, your home and the school you went to.

My school was a three-storeyed building situated in one of the residential districts of our city (town, settlement). All the children from the neighbourhood went there because it was a walking distance from their homes. There was a sports ground behind the school-building and a green lawn with flower-beds in front of it.

The school was built a few years ago. That's why its classrooms were light and spacious. There were three large windows in each classroom with flower pots on the windowsills. It was pupils' (especially girls') responsibility to water the flowers. And they did it with utmost care. There were maps and portraits, tables and charts on the walls of the classrooms.

Our classroom was on the second floor. Its windows faced the school-yard. Our form was the only one at school who had a form-master, but not a form-mistress. He appeared to be a very kind and knowledgeable teacher who spared no time to take us to different places of interest and exhibitions. He taught us Russian and Russian literature.

We respected him very much. Our lessons began at eight o'clock in the morning and lasted till one thirty in the afternoon. We had six lessons a day. Every pupil had a day-book where the teachers wrote down the mark each pupil had earned for his answers. The teacher also wrote down the mark in the class register. When the teacher asked a question, the pupils who could answer it raised their hands, and the teacher called out one of them to answer the question.

The pupils were often called to the blackboard to do some exercises or to write some sentences. When they made mistakes, other pupils .were called out to correct those mistakes or the teacher corrected them herself. After every lesson the teachers gave us some home assignments both written and oral. At the next lesson the teachers checked them up.

The teachers often took our exercise-books home to check them up. If there were any mistakes they corrected them and gave us marks. At the end of each quarter we got our report cards which our parents signed. At the end of the study year we were promoted, to the next form.
