A сам по себе произошел от one, то есть один. Как правило, с этим артиклем используют предметы беседы, о которых только что зашла речь, и он еще не упоминался. A можно использовать только с единственным числом. 
The же в свою очередь произошел от this, то есть этот. Он используется в отношении уже упомянутых ранее в беседе объектов. Можно использовать как с единственным, так и с множественным числом. 
Существует еще куча случаев, когда надо выбирать (например, the используется, когда разговор идет о чем-то, что существует единственное на свете или о частях света), но в случае с яблоком это не важно.
Разница в том, что an apple(если слово начинается с гласной, то a меняется на an) только что упомянули в диалоге, это просто какое-то яблоко, а the apple - это о конкретном яблоке.
