In the dressing-room Miss Kearney was introduced to
the secretary of the Society, Mr. Fitzpatrick. He was a short
man with a white face. He wore his soft brown hat carelessly.
Mr. Holohan came in from time to time and said that the few
people in the hall began to express their desire to be enter-
tained. At last Mr. Fitzpatrick turned to the people in the
room with a vacant smile of his and asked where the an-
nouncer was.
