Ivano-Frankivsk is the regional center of Ivano-Frankivsk region, the administrative, economic and cultural center of Prykarpattia.
The city was founded in the middle of the 17th century, from 1662 (the time of receiving the Magdeburg right) it was called Stanislaviv, Stanislav, and on November 9, 1962 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary it was renamed Ivano-Frankivsk in honor of the famous writer Ivan Franko.
The city is located on the Pokut plain of southwestern Ukraine between the rivers Bystritsa Nadvirnyanska and Bystritsa Solotvynska and is considered the eastern "gate" of the Carpathians.
The Ivano-Frankivsk City Council subordinates 5 surrounding villages: Vovchynets, Krykhivtsi, Mykytyntsi, Uhornyky, and Khryplyn.
