In the West End of London one can see the famous St. Paul's Cathedral, the masterpiece of the well-known English architect Christopher Wren. The old building of the Cathedral was sadly in need of repair and Christopher Wren was called on to carry out repairs and alterations, but he was prevented from doing this by the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London that destroyed the old cathedral. Nearly eight years passed after the fire before the ruins of the old building were cleared away and the new work was begun. When Wren made a start, he picked out a stone from the heap of ruins and found on it a word in Latin which meant «I shall rise again». So he made that the first stone of the new Cathedral. That was on June 21, 1675.
It took him thirty-five years to build the Cathedral. All that time, while doing many other things besides, he laboured at this – his greatest work. He was very poorly paid. He didn't always get his wages. But in spite of these difficulties all was splendidly finished.
The Whispering Gallery which is over 100 feet above the floor of the Cathedral, is remarkable for its acoustics. A person standing at the entrance of the Gallery can hear clearly what is said on the opposite side, 107 feet away. Beneath the centre of the dome is the tomb of Lord Nelson killed at the battle of Trafalgar.
Sir Christopher Wren, the great architect of St. Paul's, died in 1723, aged 91 and was buried in the building which his genius and toil had created.

Places of interest in LondonThere are a lot of places of interest in London. Among them there are: Westminster Abbey,the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, London Bridge, the Tower of London. London stands on the river Thames. Crossing the river by the Tower Bridge you can see the Tower of London. It is one of the oldest buildings of the city. Many centuries ago it was a fortress, a royal palace and then a prison. Now it is a museum of arms. On the bank of the Thames, not far from the Tower of London, you can see Westminster Palace, or the Houses of Parliament. It is the seat of the British government and it is one of the most beautiful buildings in London. In one of its towers there is famous Big Ben, the largest clock of England. It strikes every quarter of an hour.London is also famous for its beautiful parks. Hyde Park is the most democratic park in the world, as anyone can say anything he likes there. Regent’s Park is the home of London Zoo.

To my mind life in a large city is more comfortable than in the country or in a small town. Cities have good transportation facilities with many buses, trains, taxes or even subways.  In cities, we can go and watch a play performed in a theatre or a film in a cinema or we can watch operas or musicals, go to a cafe or a club. In cities you  can find a job easier than it can do country people because the cities have more diverse professions. So in cities, people have more various job opportunities. Living in the metropolis also provides plentiful opportunities, not only in career but also in studies.
There are a lot of different kinds of educational establishments. In the country, it is hard to find the book they want to read, or the film they want to watch. They do not have luxurious shops to buy different clothes but there are many big shopping centers in  large cities.  If you are ill you can go to a hospital with modern technological devices. To conclude, the city provides people with more optimal living conditions than the village. That's why most people live in cities and with every passing year more and more people living in the country leave their villages and move to cities.
