Language is the means of communication. International language helps people of different nations to understand each other. International language is not the phenomenon of our age only. The first international language that we know about was the language of the Phoenicians. The Phoenicians were a nation of industrious merchants and brave seafarers who settled originally on the territory of the Lebanon. The Greek language replaced Phoenician as a means of international communication. After the military expeditions of Alexander of Macedonia the Greek language won recognition all over Asia. From that time on the role of languages in the historical development of humanity has increased. It should be said that not all the languages had equal importance in different centuries in the world. Preference was given to that one which country was more powerful at that time. For example in the 19-th century French was the official language of our country. Since childhood Russian aristocrats were learning French. In the first half of the 20-th century, during the period between two World Wars, English started gradually to replace French as the international language. The leadership of English in the modern world can be explained by numerous factors. Over 300 million people who live in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America speak English is as a native language. The dominance of English in the contemporary world is explained by the appearance of lots of people who want to learn English because English has become the key to international scientific, technological and commercial innovations of today. Unfortunately, there is no universal or ideal method of learning languages. One must work hard to learn any foreign language. Everybody has his own way.
Не совсем понял вначале. Мне кажется, что в начале должно быть My friend Cathy's family и далее как есть.
You can talk to her and say that there's nothing wrong with buying things from charity shops. She should feel free to use this option as long as her family is in need. Once they find better jobs and make some more money on their own, they are going to stand on their own two feet and be independent. You can tell her that buying things from charity or as they're also called "thrift shops" help charity organisations raise money to help homeless people and children with health problems. I'd call it "killing two birds with one stone".
