Karaganda, which is the capital city of the Karaganda Region of Kazakhstan, has a population of around 485,000 people. The first settlements were built in 1856, and in 1857, coal mining began in order to supply the local copper industry. Since then, the town became a major centre for coal mining and nowadays, Karaganda is one of the largest industrial cities in the country. There is more to the city than industry, however. Karaganda also plays an important role in the cultural and economic life of Kazakhstan. In fact, there are so many monuments to history and culture there, such as the Eternal flame, the monument to Nurken Abdirov and the amazing Palace of Culture of Miners, that it’s difficult to know which one to visit first!
There are also a lot of museums and theatres, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Karaganda Museum of History, and the Kazakh Drama Theatre of S.Seifullin. So, for a unique look at life and history in Kazakhstan, make sure you visit Karaganda for a trip you won’t forget​
