Читая второе действие, сосредоточим свое внимание на следующих вопросах: Что рассказывает Осип о Хлестакове? Какая сцена является наиболее комической и почему? Почему Городничий и Хлестаков так нелепо себя ведут? Чем объяснить разницу в поведении Городничего в самом начале его встречи с Хлестаковым и потом, когда он принимает новые решения и отдает новые приказания? Перелом в поведении Городничего, когда он преодолел свой страх и понял, что ревизора нетрудно обмануть, т. е. скрыть от него все свои преступления, означает, что завязался комедийный конфликт. Борющиеся силы: с одной стороны - Городничий и его окружение, с другой - Хлестаков.
Комедийность конфликта состоит в том, что в нем все оказывается наоборот. С точки зрения здравого смысла героем, ведущим действие, нападающим, должен быть ревизор, поскольку он государственный чиновник, который приехал в город с проверкой, а Хлестаков никого не атакует, так как не является ревизором. Он оказывается объектом нападения, его по нелепому стечению обстоятельств приняли за ревизора, и он как может отражает это нападение. Героем, ведущим действие, оказывается Городничий. В основе всех его поступков - одно стремление: обмануть ревизора, создать видимость благополучия, не дать возможности ни одному человеку в городе сказать ревизору о должностных преступлениях. Все чиновники подчиняются в этом Городничему, гак как они тоже имеют свои грехи. Вот это «наоборот» пройдет через все наиболее важные моменты в развитии конфликта
