Mr. Utterson is a London lawyer who is a friend of Dr. Jekyll. Doctor Jekyll is a kind, prominent and educated man, a medical doctor and scientist. Utterson is worried because Jekyll has written a will (=his last wish) that leaves all his money to his new partner Mr. Hyde. Потому что в данных случаях tired и late - не глаголы, а прилагательные, хотя формально по форме tired - причастие II.

Например,

I have to run because I am late for a meeting with my friend. – Я должен бежать, т.к. опаздываю на встречу с другом.

Although I was tired, I did my best. - Хотя я устал, я сделал все возможное.

На русский язык переводим глаголами, т.к. ни один иностранный язык дословно не переводится. И если "я был уставший" имеет место быть в русском, то "я есть опаздывающий" - совсем плохой перевод.

Видо-временные формы в данных примерах простые: Past Simple и Present Simple, продолженные формы Continuous здесь не употребляются. Почему? Потому что, например, Вы же не будете ставить в Continuous выражение "She is beautiful" - "Она красивая" или "I am ill" - "Я болею".

И еще, например, выражение "How old are you?" мы же не переводим "На сколько ты стар?", идет аналог в русском "Сколько тебе лет?". Почему? Потому что они говорят так, а мы по-другому.
