"i shall not change my conduct even if i must die а hundred deaths . death does not matter, what matters is that i should do no wrong," he said. they voted him guilty. тhe prosecutor demanded the death реnаltу. under the law of athens it was now for the defendant to propose an alternative. socrates could suggest that he be exiled. but he did not. нis friends wanted to smuggle him out of prison but he refused to escape. when his wife xanthippe broke into hysterics in the death cell, he sent her and his sons away. не spent his last hours discussing the problems that had always intrigued him: good and evil. his mind was never idle. when his disciples saw him drink the cup of poison with dignity they wept. тhе man is gone but the "socratic" method of questioning and teaching has always bееn respected sinсе then. 17. translate the text into russian in written form. письменно переведите текст. 18. make up all possible types of questions (general, alternative, disjunctive, special, question to the subject) поставьте различные типы вопросов к следующим предложениям, укажите тип вопроса . he refused to accept a penny for teaching. the prosecutor demanded the death penalty. 19. answer the questions on the text. ответьте на вопросы по тексту. where did socrates live? he was usually angry and unkind, wasn’t he? what was his guilt? did socrates have any enemies? what did his friends propose when he was in prison? what were the problems that had always intrigued socrates? how did socrates die?

Snow, frost and sunshine ... Lovely morning!
Yet you, dear love, its magic scorning,
Are still abed ... Awake my sweet!
Cast sleep away, I beg, and, rising,
Yourself a northern star, the blazing
Aurora, northern beauty, meet.
***
A mellow glow like that of amber
Illumes the room ... Its good to linger
Beside the gaily crackling stove,
And think and dream ... But let our honest
Brown mare without delay by harnessed
That we may take a slag ride, love.

We'll give free rein to her, and lightly,
The snow of morning gleaming brightly,
Skim over it, and, full of glee,
Cross empty fields and empty meadows,
A once green wood with trees like shadows,
A stream and bank long dear to me.

My winter vacation passed wonderfully. This year heavy snow covered the ground, so there was no time to get bored. Together with friends we drove in a sleigh, made snowmen, played snowballs and just had fun. In the evening I watched TV, talked on the phone with friends and occasionally played on the computer.

The second week my family took me to a winter resort. I don’t ski very well, so it was hard in the beginning to learn how to ski down mountain slopes. But the next day, I learned to keep balance and fell to the ground only a few times. At a ski resort we spent 4 days. During this period I managed to make friends and girlfriends, with whom now I keep in touch and correspond through the internet. We hope to see one another again at the same place next year.

By the end of winter break my spirits fell. Suddenly it came in on me that I had not done some homework. But still there were a couple of days left, and I had time to do the tasks before the beginning of classes. How quickly vacations end! And how long a school year lasts!
