In 1898, Maria Sklodowska-Curie announced the possibility of the existence of a new, highly radioactive element in uranium tar ore. Her husband Pierre abandoned his own research to help Mary, and in the same year they announced the existence of two radioactive elements: polonium and radium. In 1902, they obtained one of these elements - radium. Both scientists refused to take a patent for their discovery; together they were awarded the Dewey Medal (1903) and awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1903) together with Antoine Becquerel. Marie Curie wrote the Treatise on Radioactivity (1910) and was awarded the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.Maria Skłodowska was born in Warsaw into the family of teacher Władysław Skłodowski (1832-1902), director of a men's gymnasium. The father played a huge role in the life of the youngest daughter. He graduated from St. Petersburg University and was aware of the latest advances in physics, chemistry and mathematics, knew Russian, Latin and Greek, spoke French, German and English, wrote poetry and translated. Vladislav taught mathematics and physics in schools in Warsaw. Her mother, Bronislaw Boguska, ran the prestigious Warsaw School for Girls. After Maria's birth in 1868, Vladislav was appointed a teacher at another school on Novolipskaya Street, so Bronislava was forced to leave her post due to relocation.

London Landmarks: Houses of Parliament
Sitting alongside Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament are another of the best London landmarks. The Gothic Revival building sits on the Thames in all its spiky splendor, holding history in its walls.
My favorite view of the Houses of Parliament is from the London Eye, where the whole building looks spectacular.
