Быт русского населения в 16 веке зависел в первую очередь от материального благосостояния. Пища в то время была достаточно простой, но многообразной: блины, караваи, кисель, овощи и каши.
Сравнительно недорогое по тем временам мясо солили в дубовых кадках и держали впрок. Также особой любовью пользовались блюда из рыбы, которую употребляли во всех возможных вариациях: соленную, сушенную и вяленную.
Напитки были представлены безалкогольными морсами и компотами. Слабоалкогольные напитки по вкусовым качествам очень напоминали современное пиво, их делали на основе меда и хмеля.
В 16 веке строго соблюдались посты, помимо основных четырех постов, люди отказывались от скоромной пищи по средам и пятницам
