В древности существовало четыре основных вида арфы: дуговые - наиболее древние, на которых играли как плектром, так и без него; угловые трех видов - с горизонтальным резонатором, вертикально расширяющимся и вертикально сужающимся изогнутым резонатором. Арфы широко использовались в жизни шумеров, вавилонян, ассирийцев: звучание арф, очевидно, сопровождавшее ритуальные и дворцовые сцены, подчеркивало их значимость. 

Происхождение арфы относят к возникновению охотничьего лука, использовавшегося в Каменном Веке. Он делался из согнутой ветки и кишечной (кетгут) струны, производящей звук при подергивании. Ранние изображения подобного музыкального лука были найдены в виде наскальных рисунков (например, в пещере Trois Freres, 15000BC, Ariege, France). Эти инструменты дали основу для развития лучной арфы, которая переживала свой золотой век в эпоху заката Египетской цивилизации. Вариацией арфы была лира, которая в дальнейшем стала очень популярной в Греции. В эпоху эллинизма лира была неотъемлемым атрибутом поэтов и певцов, что можно наблюдать на различных картинах и письменных памятниках. Размер арфы варьировался, вид малой лучной арфы перешел из Греции в Европу и достиг сферы влияния на кельтов. Легенда гласит, что друиды привезли арфу из Атлантиды как священный инструмент в Ирландию и Великобританию. Хотя, более правдоподобно звучит то предположение, что арфа попала в Европу благодаря развитию торговых отношений. С этих времен сохранились только некоторые описания, которые были сделаны очень давно и в большинстве своем неверны.
